Tesla owners have told me for years that the Supercharger network was a huge selling point, and this trip proved that to be true. On the return trip, I simply plugged in a Supercharger along my route into the computer and headed down the road. The truck immediately began charging at warp speed compared to my other two tries, adding 140 miles of range every hour. I dropped off the truck with about 125 miles of range right next to a Supercharger. On my next road trip in an EV, I'll double-check my adapters — and not count on random ones to get the job done.

It's also the first year-over-year decline in quarterly deliveries since 2020, as well as the company's lowest quarterly performance since 2022. Over the past year, Tesla has cut the prices of its cars significantly, hurting its profits in pursuit of sales. During an earnings call last year, Musk said that Tesla could theoretically sell its cars for no profit because of the technology.

Read previewNew Tesla Cybertruck owners might want to wash winter road grime off their pickup as soon as possible. Manuals for other Tesla models also advise immediate removal of corrosive substances — but "to prevent damage to the paint," rather than the exterior metal itself. Road salt is one of the biggest culprits of corrosion in cars, but typically, the undercarriage is most at risk since paint can protect the body panels. Chevrolet warns salt may damage the paint of its Silverado if it remains on the exterior for extended periods of time. Of course, depending on who you ask, the Cybertruck's lack of a finish on the steel may be a feature instead of a bug.

CEO Carlos Tavares says the company's new large platform is flexible enough to handle batteries and electric motors, gas-electric hybrids and internal combustion engines. The company can also build midsize to large vehicles on those underpinnings, including sedans, crossover vehicles, SUVs and even off-road Jeeps. Electric vehicle sales growth is already slowing in many countries with consumers balking at the added cost as well as limited range and too few charging stations. On Friday, Ford said it was cutting production of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup after weaker-than-expected electric vehicle sales growth. A midsize vehicle platform announced by the company last year has similar flexibility, the company said.

About 1,400 employees will be impacted as the plant where Ford's flagship electric truck is produced, the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, transitions to just one shift per day starting on April 1, Ford said. AdvertisementFord sold fewer than 25,000 of the F-150 Lightning pickup in 2023 as it scaled back production. That still notched it a spot in the top 10 EVs by sales but is dwarfed by traditional F-150 sales of more than 700,000. Ford has also struggled to get dealers on board with its electric sales program, requiring a substantial investment on their part to install chargers and receive new training.

Tesla Model 3, the cheapest Tesla model, is currently listed for $40,240 on Tesla's website.
